A new alliance of Nicaraguan contras, formed to try to strengthen support in the United States and inside Nicaragua for their fight against Managua’s Sandinista regime, has elected six members of its planned seven-member board of directors.

Calling itself the Nicaraguan Resistance, the alliance brings together representatives of the United Nicaraguan Opposition, formerly the main rebel umbrella group, and the Costa Rica-based Southern Opposition Bloc.

Directors elected by the alliance’s 54-member assembly are Adolfo Calero, top civilian leader of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force, the largest rebel guerrilla band; Aristides Sanchez, also of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force; Alfonso Robelo, founder of the Nicaraguan Democratic Movement, a political party; Pedro Joaquin Chamorro Jr., son of the late founder of Nicaragua’s now-shuttered newspaper La Prensa; Azucena Ferrey, a leader of the Social Christian Party, and Alfredo Cesar of the Southern Opposition Bloc. A seventh director representing Nicaragua’s Miskito Indians will be chosen later this month.
