Killer Executed in Georgia as Appeals Fail
Joseph Mulligan, 35, who was convicted of killing a witness to a murder he committed for the insurance money, was put to death Friday in Georgia’s electric chair.
“The order of the court has been carried out and the condemned was executed,” said Fred Steeple, a prison spokesman.
Earlier Friday, the Supreme Court, by a 7-2 vote, turned down an emergency request aimed at postponing Mulligan’s execution and a formal appeal challenging his conviction and death sentence.
Mulligan, from Beaufort, S.C., was convicted in the 1974 killing of his brother-in-law, Army Capt. Patrick Doe, and Marion Miller, Doe’s girlfriend. Doe and Mulligan’s sister were seeking a divorce.
Prosecutors said the murders were part of a scheme for Mulligan’s sister to collect on Doe’s life insurance before the divorce.
