Police in riot gear clashed with small groups of demonstrators during a protest by more than 8,000 people in West Berlin against a census set for May 25 in the city and West Germany. About 50 youths, some wearing masks, fought running battles with police and smashed windows of supermarkets and banks. Police used batons to disperse them and arrested five people. The demonstration began peacefully, with protesters carrying banners declaring “Stop the Census” and “May 25 Equals Scrap Paper Day.” Critics charge the census is an invasion of privacy and could be used for repressive measures.
