Three Die at Beauty Contest in Nigeria
Three students of Obafemi Awolowo University in the western Nigerian city of Ile-ife died in an overcrowded hall during a beauty contest, the independent newspaper Guardian reported Monday.
The newspaper said that about 3,500 youths, mostly students, packed the Oduduwa Hall for the annual Miss Campus Beauty competition Saturday night.
One victim died when she fell 18 feet while trying to reach a higher level of the hall, the newspaper said. The other two students reportedly fainted and later died in the crowd, apparently of suffocation.
