Researchers from the State University of New York at Stony Brook said their findings from an expedition to Antarctica last summer provide the strongest clues yet that gases known as chlorofluorocarbons are destroying ozone in the upper atmosphere there. Ozone in the atmosphere filters out dangerous ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Robert de Zafra and Philip M. Solomon, speaking at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Baltimore, said the severe stratospheric ozone depletion over Antarctica apparently is unique.
