Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev on Tuesday attended the opening session in Moscow of the ultra-conservative Artists’ Union of the Russian Federation congress and called for the fine arts to join in the Kremlin’s drive for social renewal. The union, considered one of the most conservative of the nation’s creative unions, is experiencing a division over the Communist Party’s new social and artistic policies.
