France’s Communist Party chose a party hard-liner, Andre Lajoinie, 57, as candidate for next year’s presidential election. Lajoinie, leader of the Communist delegation in the National Assembly, was chosen unanimously at a party central committee meeting in Paris, Secretary General Georges Marchais said. The choice of Lajoinie, considered ultra-orthodox, was seen as underlining Marchais’ refusal to compromise with reformers who have called for radical measures to change and modernize the party.
