San Diego : Man Shot at Station Faces Robbery Charge

Share

The condition of a San Diego man shot in the back by a gas station clerk during an apparent robbery attempt Friday afternoon was upgraded to fair Saturday, a UC San Diego Medical Center spokeswoman said.

Daniel Allen Jones, 27, is being held under guard by sheriff’s deputies at the hospital on suspicion of robbery, San Diego police said. The nursing supervisor at the hospital, Jane Swett, would not comment Saturday on earlier reports that Jones could be paralyzed from the waist down.

About 4 p.m. Friday, Jones approached the convenience store counter at a gas station at 54th Street and University Avenue, reached into his waistband and told the clerk, “Give it to me,” police spokesman Bill Robinson said Friday. A second clerk came out from the back room and fired one shot from a small-caliber gun kept at the station. Robinson said Jones had a lug wrench in his waistband.

When Jones is well enough to leave the hospital, he will be transferred to County Jail downtown, according to police. Swett would not comment on how soon Jones might be discharged.

In Saturday’s edition of The Times, Jones was incorrectly identified as being 17 years old.
