Islamic extremists holding foreign hostages in Lebanon have sold at least one of their French captives to Libya, a senior Syrian officer was quoted as saying. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan, who commands Syrian troops in West Beirut, told Le Figaro magazine that Libya had bought one or more French hostages in order to pressure France into changing its po1818846073series of crushing defeats since January. France has about 2,200 men plus combat aircraft in the central African country and has provided arms and training to Chadian forces.
