Developments in Brief : 100-Million-Year-Old Fossils Found in Mexico
Geologists in Mexico have discovered fossils of a crocodile and a dinosaur that they say date back 100 million years.
The findings, particularly that of the dinosaur, could change current views on the geological formation of the American continent because such remains had only been found in Canada, the United States and the northeastern Mexico state of Tamaulipas, on the border with Texas, according to the scientists, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Rene Hernandez Rivera and Shelton P. Apelgate of the university’s Geology Institute made the discovery near Tepexi de Rodriguez, about 300 miles southeast of Mexico City in Puebla state.
The crocodile fossil is believed to date back 100 million years and the dinosaur 135 million to 190 million years, they said.
Hernandez said they were continuing to collect the remains, which include fragments that may be part of the dinosaur’s femur, a bone in the leg.
