The odds of surviving a heart attack improved by about one-third during the 1970s, largely because of better medical care, a study concludes. The death rate from heart disease has fallen by almost 40% over the last two decades and the new study concludes that improved long-term survival after heart attacks “has made an important contribution to the decline in mortality from coronary artery disease.” The research, directed by Dr. Orlando Gomez-Marin of the University of Minnesota as part of the Minnesota Heart Study, was published in today’s New England Journal of Medicine.
