A woman, 88, who hid many Jewish children from the Nazis during World War II, recounted at Klaus Barbie’s trial how 44 youngsters were herded into a truck bound for the Auschwitz gas chambers. Sabina Zlatin said the children and seven adults, all Jewish, were arrested April 6, 1944, in a French village near Lyon. “There can be no pardon, no forgetfulness, for this odious crime,” she said. Barbie, Gestapo chief in Lyon during the war, is on trial for crimes against humanity. He was again allowed to boycott the trial after being forced to appear Tuesday for identification by witnesses.
