President Reagan said Wednesday that he hopes he will meet Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev this fall at a summit conference.

“It is up to General Secretary Gorbachev now to set the date,” the President said in an interview with foreign journalists. “The invitation is there. They have agreed to come. Now it’s simply a case of when will that take place?”

Although the President and others in his Administration have spoken in upbeat tones recently about the prospects for a summit on arms control, his remarks showed particular optimism.

Reagan has made it clear that a date for such a meeting will not be set unless there is a good chance that it would produce a pact on limiting nuclear weapons. U.S. and Soviet negotiators are now concentrating their efforts on a treaty reducing medium-range missiles.
