Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has dissolved the ruling Islamic Republican Party, the Tehran newspaper Kayhan reported. President Ali Khamenei and Parliament Speaker Hashemi Rafsanjani, contending that an opposition no longer exists in Iran, had written Khomeini to say there is “no need” for the party and that it should be dissolved to prevent “internal differences.” There have been persistent reports of a power struggle in Iran between radical and more moderate elements. The Islamic Republican Party, under Khomeini, has ruled the nation since 1979.
