The Reagan Administration has proposed selling up to six helicopters to Colombia for use by its military in fighting drug traffickers and insurgent forces. In notifying Congress, the Pentagon said that the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters are needed “to counter the narco-terrorism challenging (Colombia’s) social, political and economic institutions.” U.S. Army helicopters airlifted Bolivian troops last year in operations against drug producers, and 3 U.S. copters ferried 300 Guatemalan troops to a remote area of the country last month to fight leftist rebels. The planned sale carries an estimated price tag of $36 million.
