Doctors protesting health-service cutbacks struck Ireland’s 90 state-run hospitals Saturday, forcing many to halt all but emergency service.

The strike by 1,800 doctors began at 7 a.m. after talks with management broke down four hours earlier, union and hospital officials said.

Senior hospital doctors were on duty Saturday to provide emergency surgery and treatment and keep accident wards open, but hospitals throughout the country reduced services.
