The U.S Forest Service has modified a controversial plan that will allow for logging in the scenic Stanislaus National Forest, but will protect a popular campground. Under the plan, logging will be prohibited within a half-mile of Camp Tawaonga, a vacation destination near Yosemite National Park. The proposed Bear Timber Sale involves eight square miles of mostly virgin forest. Under the terms of the agreement with the Forest Service, a Folsom, Calif., lumber company would pay more than $6 million for the rights to 7,000 truckloads of pine, fir and cedar.
