Gray Named to Head Marines

President Reagan announced today that he is nominating Lt. Gen. Alfred M. Gray Jr. to serve as commandant of the Marine Corps and is elevating him to the rank of general.

Gray, commanding general of the Marine Atlantic Fleet, who will be 59 on Monday, succeeds Gen. P. X. Kelley, who is retiring July 1. Gray, a native of Point Beach, N.J., has also been serving as commanding general of the 2nd Marine Amphibious Brigade since September, 1984.
