A right-wing death squad in El Salvador, the Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez Anti-Communist Brigade, released a list of 14 university teachers and students who it said are leftist extremists and warned them to leave the country within 48 hours. The communique, issued to local media, said those on the list have ties to leftist guerrillas fighting the U.S.-backed government. It was the first time in two years that such a list has appeared. The threat coincides with an increase in urban attacks by the rebels and several unexplained attacks against groups considered sympathetic to them.
