The Board of Education has named Thomas H. Peeler, an administrator of Santa Barbara public schools, as district superintendent.

Peeler replaces Richard S. Kirkendall, who is retiring after 24 years with Claremont schools, the last 18 as superintendent.

The 52-year-old Peeler, acting superintendent in the Santa Barbara School District, will take over the $75,400-a-year job on Aug. 1. He comes from a district serving more than 12,000 students, more than twice the enrollment of the Claremont district.
