The World : 1,200 Rebels Join Aquino

More than 1,200 Communist rebels, including a mayor and 200 fighters, turned themselves in at a ceremony in Tandag on strife-torn Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. They swore loyalty to President Corazon Aquino’s government in the biggest mass surrender since the start of a rebel amnesty program four months ago. The surrender of the 200 fighters brought to about 450 the number of New People’s Army guerrilla fighters who have laid down their arms since Aquino announced the amnesty, military officials said.
