Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s party suffered a significant defeat in the north Indian state of Haryana, the 10th state in which the Congress-I party has lost control since he came to power in 1984. The election was seen as a barometer of the party’s appeal in its traditional base, the Hindi-speaking Ganges plain. With results complete in 50 of 87 state assembly races, Gandhi’s party had won just two seats, losing at least 18 previously held seats. An opposition coalition captured 41, and it was projected to win a two-thirds majority.
