‘Taste of Humbug, Risk of Danger’
I cannot help but respond to an unfortunately misleading interpretation of Sri Lankan communal struggle by Paul Johnson (Editorial Pages, June 9), “Taste of Humbug, Risk of Danger,” which appeared in your esteemed paper.
I am not the one to support India’s foreign policy--I never do--in the post-Nehru era, but I could not tolerate Johnson’s grossly distorted and naive interpretation of the current Sri Lankan events; it is historically flawed and shows Johnson’s personal bias against Indians everywhere.
He has a very British-centered view of the region; he called them (the British) “neutral paramount power” in the region. The British were never so. Nothing could be further from that; the British taught the South Asians to abuse each other!
