Candelaria Returns to Disabled List--Personal Reasons; Angels Sign Reuss

John Candelaria was placed on the 15-day disabled list for “personal reasons” again Friday, and to fill Candelaria’s spot on the roster, the Angels announced the signing of former Dodger pitcher Jerry Reuss.

Reuss, released by the Cincinnati Reds last Saturday, will replace Candelaria in the Angels’ starting rotation, pitching Sunday against the Kansas City Royals.

Candelaria, 33, was arrested on May 14 for allegedly driving while intoxicated. It was his second such arrest in four weeks.

He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, also for personal reasons, returned on May 29 and made four starts, compiling a 1-2 record and a 6.45 earned-run average. Overall, he is 5-3 with a 4.78 ERA.

General Manager Mike Port refused to comment on Candelaria’s present situation.

Mauch would only say: “As far as what the procedure is from there (the disabled list), I’m quite sure it doesn’t include working out. It would be awful nice if everybody in the world who had any kind of problem got this kind of support.”

Reuss, released by the Dodgers after appearing in only one game this season, last pitched on June 12. The left-hander, who turned 38 Friday, was 0-5 with a 7.79 ERA in seven starts for the Reds.

“The velocity is still there,” said Reuss, who will wear No. 44, worn previously by ex-Angel Reggie Jackson. “I’ve just got to be more consistent with my pitches.”
