Demonstrators from France and a dozen other European countries marched through Paris to call for an end to nuclear energy. There were no official estimates of the numbers, but organizers said the march was twice as large as one held in Paris in May, 1986, when more than 5,000 protested after the Soviet nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Speakers from France, West Germany, Luxembourg, Italy and Britain called for an end to nuclear power programs throughout the world. The organizers had said the march would be a test of the revival of anti-nuclear sentiment in France, where there has traditionally been strong support for nuclear energy.
