Share

Suspected Kurdish guerrillas herded residents of an eastern Turkish village into the town square and unleashed a barrage of grenades and automatic weapons fire, killing at least 30 people, the Anatolian news agency said. Witnesses told the news agency that the rebels surrounded the village of Pinarcik, near the Syrian border, during the night and then ordered residents into the main square, where they opened fire. It was the deadliest attack in the Kurdish guerrillas’ three-year-old battle for an independent state. Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Ozal, in Istanbul, vowed revenge, saying, “Let no one doubt it; we shall clean away the smell of the bandits for sure.”
