Militant Gurkhas offered to call off their latest violent campaign for a Gurkha state in northeast India if police release one of their leaders, Churamoni Kharga, the Press Trust of India said. One person has been killed and nearly 30 official buildings burned since the Gurkha National Liberation Front began a 13-day strike in West Bengal’s Darjeeling region. The 900,000 Gurkhas comprise a majority in Darjeeling, but the Indian and West Bengal governments have rejected the Gurkha Front’s demand for an independent state in West Bengal.
