Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres won backing from British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for his proposal to hold an international conference on the Middle East. He met for nearly two hours with Thatcher in London as part of a European tour to win support for the conference, which could lead to direct talks between Israel and Arab countries. The British prime minister “made it clear the United Kingdom considered an international conference the most practical way forward to negotiations. . . ,” her spokesman said.
