Duarte : Schoolhouse to Be Saved

Share

The City Council has passed a resolution that will save a schoolhouse, built in 1909, from demolition. The schoolhouse, at Buena Vista and Central avenues, is on a corner of a 15-acre tract that the city plans to develop into an auto row through a land swap with the Duarte Unified School District.

The building houses the school district headquarters. Under the plan, the headquarters would be moved to Huntington Drive, and the schoolhouse would be kept at the site and used as an auto dealer’s office.

A group of preservationists had asked the city to save the schoolhouse because it is one of the few historic buildings left in the city. The resolution adopted Tuesday says the exterior of the building must be preserved, though the interior can be renovated by the developer.
