The World : 7 Die in Pakistan Protest
Three bombs exploded in bus and rail terminals in Lahore, Pakistan, killing seven people and wounding at least 50 on the 10th anniversary of the military coup that brought President Zia ul-Haq to power. No group claimed responsibility, and authorities would not speculate whether the bombings were connected to the coup in which Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was overthrown July 5, 1977. Bhutto was hanged 21 months later for complicity in the murder of a political rival. Opposition leaders, declaring the anniversary of Bhutto’s death as “Black Sunday,” called for protests to press for restoration of democracy.
