New York art mogul David Tunick paid $2,833,600 Monday at a Christie’s auction of a 16th-Century drawing by Italian master Federico Barocci, a Christie’s spokeswoman said. “Madonna del Popolo,” depicting the Virgin Mary with Jesus, was one of 12 Old Masters drawings that went on the auction block, fetching a total of $10,130,120. The drawings--including works by Rembrandt, Raphael and Van Dyck--were put on auction by the Chatsworth Estate of the Duke of Devonshire, Andrew Harpington.
