Israeli troops backed by helicopter gunships killed seven Shia Muslim guerrillas in Lebanon during a daylong battle just north of the Israeli border, the Israeli army reported. An army official charged that, at one point, the Shia guerrillas took refuge in a military post manned by Nepalese troops assigned to the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon. He said Israeli troops were unable to return fire because of general orders never to fire at U.N. posts. Timur Goksel, a UNIFIL spokesman, confirmed that the post was overrun by the Shias and said that the Nepalese troops were powerless to stop them.
