Aquino Calls for Action on Crime

President Corazon Aquino, saying she is disappointed over police inability to solve major crimes in the Philippines, Tuesday ordered authorities to speed up investigations and produce results.

“It is really getting to be embarrassing,” Aquino told senior military and police commanders, including the military chief of staff, Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, following a campaign of assassinations and bombings.

Aquino’s call for action came after 11 bomb explosions--four in a cluster last weekend--rocked Manila recently. The military has blamed the bombings, which caused a few injuries and minor damage, on right-wing extremists.

Press secretary Teodoro Benigno told reporters that Aquino renewed her orders “because she failed to see that enough results were being produced.

“She expressed her disappointment and even her impatience. But the military promised that they will do their best to improve their performance.”
