Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, barred from the United States on suspicion that he was involved in World War II atrocities while serving with Hitler’s army, has been invited to visit Bonn. West German President Richard von Weizsaecker proposed a “neighborly meeting,” according to Austrian Foreign Minister Alois Mock. The invitation--not amounting to a state visit--is nonetheless the first one known to have been extended to Waldheim by a Western head of state.
