The latest figures show 534 confirmed cases of AIDS in Mexico, compared to 407 cases at the end of March, according to the federal Health Department’s chief of epidemiology.

Dr. Jaime Sepulveda Amor also said that the number of acquired immune deficiency syndrome cases in the country has doubled every seven months and that it is projected there will be 22,000 cases within the next decade.

He said AIDS will be considered the most serious disease in the country.

In November, the government added AIDS to the list of diseases that physicians must report to federal authorities.
