The new dean of student affairs at the Third College of UC San Diego will be Luis O. Ramirez, the present director of the Student Assistance Center at Western Washington University in Bellingam, Wash., UCSD officials have announced.
The appointment will take effect Monday, Faustina Solis, assistant chancellor and provost of Third College, said.
Ramirez replaces Beverly Varga, the longtime student dean at the minority-oriented college who was fired by Solis last year for alleged erratic and unprofessional behavior. Vargas has appealed her firing.
Ramirez will administer student life activities for the college’s 3,000 students, will handle budget and personnel matters, supervise student discipline and oversee the residence hall program.
Ramirez has been at Western Washington for almost nine years in variety of positions, including the student assistance center. He previously served as director of Chicano Supportive Services at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he also obtained a masters degree in history.
