40,000 Gold Miners Pollute China Region

BEIJING —
A three-year gold rush that has drawn 40,000 hopeful miners to an arid region of northwest China has poisoned rivers and triggered serious soil erosion, the official China Daily said Thursday.
Toxic waste from the mines in the Hexi area of Gansu province has affected drinking water supplies, and unauthorized wells have hurt irrigation, the paper said.
