The mayor of an Israeli town dispatched heavy vehicles to block the nation’s busy coastal road to protest a government vow to return to Druze villagers land they had fought for with knives and chains. The roadblock by two trucks and a tractor sent by Eli Landau, mayor of Herzliya, 10 miles north of Tel Aviv, lasted 45 minutes, Israel television reported. Landau, a member of the right-wing Likud Bloc, said he was protesting the government’s agreement to hand back 3,000 acres of land to Druze villagers from Beit Jann in the Galilee district of northern Israel.
