Iraq claimed that its troops, backed by fighter-bombers, helicopter gunships and artillery, recaptured parts of the Majnoon oil fields and killed hundreds of Iranians. But Iran, denying the report, said it “smashed” the thrust into the southern part of Iraq and inflicted hundreds of casualties. Reports on the nearly seven-year-old war are difficult to verify because the opponents rarely allow independent confirmation.
