Nearly three-fourths of the Denver police and two-thirds of the firefighters who retired in the last 7 1/2 years are getting disability pensions based on injuries that never prevented them from working, the Rocky Mountain News reported. The paper cited state records showing that 72% of the Denver police and 63% of the firefighters retired since 1980 were awarded disability pensions, which are not taxed. It said that a survey found Denver to be the most lenient city, followed by San Diego and Seattle, which both awarded disability pensions to about 60% of their police retirees in 1984-1986.
