‘New Order’
Michael Novak’s “Swelling Ranks for New Order of the Ages,” (Editorial Pages, July 3) gives the Reagan Adminstration full credit for having “presided over one of the greatest expansions in the number of democracies in human history.” It is hard to imagine a more arrogant or insulting statement coming from a person or a country.
We might, as a country, have been encouraging, but in Central America we have sabotaged both the Contadora and Arias proposals that would work toward democracy.
We might have acted as an example of non-violent resolution of conflict, but the Iran- contra hearings are showing that we have not.
We might have been helpful, as we were with the Marshall Plan, and develop the people resources of the country through education, good medical care and technological know-how, but instead we have armed the world.
The credit for these new democracies, “nearly a dozen,” cannot go to the Reagan Administration, but to the people and leaders of those countries that have had a vision and have fought and sacrificed to see that vision realized.
