Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher today tartly sprang to the defense of Britain’s Royal Family against criticism of its escapades.

Asked on ABC’s “Good Morning America” whether she thought the younger royals were “making fools of themselves” in recent public appearances, Thatcher gave an uncompromising reply.

“We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful monarch and such a wonderful Royal Family,” she said firmly, “very fortunate indeed.”

People magazine this week carried cover photographs of Britain’s future queen, Diana, Princess of Wales, and her sister-in-law Sarah, Duchess of York, over a caption saying “Naughty, Naughty!”

The story reported recent escapades involving the pair including prodding men with their umbrellas.
