The Environmental Protection Agency today added 99 hazardous waste sites, including 32 federal facilities, to its priority list of dumps eligible for cleanup under the Superfund program.

The agency said it is the first time it has put federal facilities on the final Superfund priority list.

Priscilla Flattery, a spokeswoman for the agency, said that when a site is placed on the list, it becomes eligible for “long-term cleanup funds” from the Superfund. Non-priority hazardous waste sites may receive other Superfund money, but not the long-term funds.

The additions to the priority list bring the total number of such sites to 802.

New Jersey, with 96 priority Superfund sites, has the largest number of serious hazardous waste dumps. It is followed by New York (63 sites), Pennsylvania (61), Michigan (58) and California (48).
