USOC Considers Providing AIDS Packet, Condom

Dr. Robert Voy, the U.S. Olympic Committee’s chief medical officer, said Monday that the USOC’s medical commission has discussed providing an informational packet on AIDS for all U.S. athletes competing internationally.

Included in the packet, he said during a news conference at the U.S. Olympic Festival, would be one condom for each athlete.

“Only one?” a Boston Globe reporter asked.

Voy grinned.

“To provide more than one would get into the question of whether we’re promoting something,” he said.

A precedent was established at the recent World University Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, where organizers provided a condom for each athlete.

Hill Carrow, president of North Carolina Amateur Sports, said no such action was considered for the Festival.

“There are some things we’re just not ready for in North Carolina,” he said.
