BEIJING — A tractor pulling a trailer packed with schoolchildren collided with a truck in northeastern China, triggering an explosion that killed eight children and injured 36, the newspaper China Daily reported Wednesday.
It said the accident occurred July 9 in Heilongjiang province, about 800 miles northeast of Beijing. The children were being taken to work on a farm.
The truck’s fuel tank exploded, burning 44 children. Eight of those injured died in a hospital and eight others remain in serious condition, the report said, quoting a local paper, the Heilongjiang Daily.
The vice principal of the primary school who had sent the children to the farm was arrested on unspecifed charges.
