Japan Holdups on Rise

TOKYO —
Bank and supermarket robberies in Japan rose in the first half of this year, apparently because of growing economic hardship, police said Friday.
There were 42 bank holdups against 34 in the same period last year, while late night robberies of supermarkets rose to 39 from 21.
