Tarik Aziz, the Iraqi foreign minister, will meet Monday with Secretary of State George P. Shultz on U.S.-backed efforts in the United Nations to impose a cease-fire in the Persian Gulf War between Iraq and Iran.

Aziz has been in New York for meetings with U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, who has primary responsibility to carry out the Security Council’s resolution of last week that demanded a halt to the fighting.

Iraq has agreed to end the nearly seven-year-old war, but Iran is resisting the cease-fire order while it continues its strategy of driving into Iraqi territory.
