TOKYO — Bank and supermarket robberies in Japan rose in the first half of this year, apparently because of growing economic hardship, police said Friday.
There were 42 bank holdups, contrasted with 34 in the same period last year, while late-night robberies of supermarkets rose from 21 to 39.
Police blamed the increases on the rise in the value of the yen. Unemployment hit a postwar high of 3.2% in May amid falling demand abroad for Japanese goods.
