Secretary of State Testifies at the Iran-Contra Hearings

We, your readers, have seldom been subjected to a cartoon in as bad taste as the Dwane Powell cartoon, “Ollie’s Medals” (Letters, July 18). Powell certainly is entitled to his opinion of North, as we all are, but those of us who served our nation on the battlefield in wartime know that the medals that North has been awarded were not easily won. They represent real valor and true meritorious achievement, and are not objects to be ridiculed and belittled by someone like Powell. Comparing the Silver Star to the acquisition of panty hose is an insult to every serviceman and ex-serviceman in the nation. I wonder what medals Powell has earned in the service of his country? I herewith award him the Bad Taste Ribbon with Poison Oak Cluster.
