‘Catastrophic Legislation’
Re: Richard Lamm’s “Catastrophic-Illness Legislation” (Editorial Pages, July 21):
Lamm’s “suggestion” that creating programs to help the elderly will burden our children contains a very important message. It is a prime example of bias and discrimination. Whatever his moral pretensions might be, he has kissed basic goodness goodby. If Lamm thinks that a heart transplant unnaturally prolongs life, he may also feel that eyeglasses unnaturally provide sight. Health care is essential to all ages. This country has done so much to help people live longer and dignified lives. We should all be grateful to past generations for the technology that enables us to live much longer and healthier than those before us.
The picture of aging in the United States is bleak, especially when we are subjected to people who choose non-solutions. Living by the clock is arbitrary. Life is not judged by that kind of time.
The older members of my family have made valuable contributions to society. They are loving and unique individuals, and I want them around no matter what it takes.
